This set from the Japanese maker Tamiya's line of detail accessories is intended for the kit of the Lotus 79 Formula 1 car in 1:20 scale. It contains photo-etched metal parts for the brake discs, the radiator, the front and rear wing panels and the bodywork catches, plus small items such as the master switch, the fuel filler and the tow eye. They are complemented by material and metal buckles for making up the seat belts. It is not a model in its own right but an upgrade set.
The Lotus 79 is one of the best-known Formula 1 cars of the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. It was the first thoroughly resolved car to exploit ground effect, that is the downforce created by the airflow under the floor of the car, and its shapes influenced the whole following generation of single-seaters. It was powered by the Ford Cosworth DFV V8. In the 1978 season Mario Andretti took the drivers' world championship with it and Lotus won the constructors' cup; this photo-etched set matches the car as it was for the 1979 season.
Separate the photo-etched parts with a sharp scalpel or special scissors on a hard surface, and never tear them out. Make the folds in a photo-etch bender or between two blades, so that the edge comes out sharp and straight. They are bonded with super glue applied on a toothpick; on larger areas a two-part epoxy helps. Degrease the parts before painting and apply a primer intended for metal. The perforated radiator parts look best painted in a dark shade and picked out lightly with a dry brush. Make the belts up away from the model, thread the buckles dry and only then glue the whole assembly into the cockpit.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
