An injection-molded plastic kit of the German battleship Gneisenau in 1:200 scale from the manufacturer Trumpeter. On ships of this size 1:200 really is a large scale - the finished model measures 1175 mm long and 150 mm wide, that is, almost 1.2 meters. The manufacturer states 1496 parts. The hull is one piece, molded with slide molds working in two directions, the decks have a finely engraved structure and the guns are worked out in detail. The package holds photo-etched frets with railings, ladders and parts of the radars, metal anchor chains and shafts and also two Arado Ar 196 floatplanes for reconnaissance, which the ship really did carry.
Gneisenau was, together with her sister Scharnhorst, a lead ship of her class - fast battleships with nine 28 cm guns in three triple turrets. Both ships were the terror of Allied convoys: during the Atlantic campaign at the beginning of 1941 they took part in sinking and capturing tens of thousands of tons of merchant shipping. The best known moment of Gneisenau was her dash through the English Channel in February 1942 (Operation Cerberus, the Channel Dash), when the German force sailed from Brest and passed home to Germany in broad daylight under the noses of the British - for the Royal Navy it was an enormous humiliation. Soon after her return Gneisenau was heavily damaged in an air raid on Kiel and never returned to operational service.
A ship model is a different discipline from an aircraft or a tank - the main work is in the superstructure, the armament, the railings and the rigging, and there is an enormous quantity of small parts. Build in subassemblies and paint the decks and the hull before the superstructures go on. Spray the guns and the anti-aircraft armament in batches while they are still on the sprues. Add the photo-etched railings and ladders at the very end - bond them with super glue and with good tweezers. Rig the ship with fine thread once everything is painted. On a model almost 1.2 meters long, count on a solid stand and a rigid base so that the hull does not sag. German gray camouflage schemes come out well with light lightening of the surfaces and restrained weathering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
