USS Hornet CV-8 in 1:200 scale from I Love Kit - a giant kit of the aircraft carrier with a finished length of over 1.2 meters, a detailed hangar and a complete air group including sixteen B-25 bombers of the Doolittle Raid.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the American aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8) in 1:200 scale from I Love Kit, which belongs to the group connected with the manufacturer Trumpeter. On large ships 1:200 really is a large scale: the finished model measures over 1239 mm, that is more than 1.2 meters, and is made up of more than 1290 parts. The hull is one piece and full-hull, including the underwater part, the hangar is worked out in detail and the flight deck is molded in clear plastic, so the inside of the ship can stay visible. In the package there are photo-etched parts for the railings and the radars, turned metal gun barrels for the five-inch guns and metal anchor chains. What matters most for the atmosphere of the model is the air group for the deck: 16x B-25B, 5x F4F-4 Wildcat fighters, 5x SBD Dauntless dive bombers and 8x TBD-1 Devastator torpedo bombers.
USS Hornet was the last of the three Yorktown class aircraft carriers and entered service in the fall of 1941. She went into history in the spring of the following year: on April 18, 1942 sixteen twin-engined B-25 bombers of the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo took off from her deck, the first American blow struck directly at Japanese territory. Medium bombers were not designed to take off from a deck and a return to the ship was out of the question. The Hornet then took part in the Battle of Midway, and on October 26, 1942 she was badly damaged by Japanese aircraft in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands and sunk. Her combat career lasted less than a year.
A ship model is a different discipline from an aircraft or a tank: the main work lies in the superstructure, the armament and the railings, and the number of small parts is enormous. Build in sub-assemblies: paint the hull and the decks before the superstructure goes on, because afterwards you will not reach the lower surfaces. Spray the small guns and the anti-aircraft weapons in bulk while they are still on the sprues. Glue the photo-etched railings right at the end, with cyanoacrylate and good tweezers. On a model of this length, think about a rigid base and a firm stand: the hull must not sag. Keep the weathering restrained; large gray areas will not take exaggerated effects.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
