A set of the LACI brand makes it possible to build a model of the Boeing 747-400 airliner in 1:144 scale with the high-lift devices extended, that is, in landing configuration. It is not a model of an aircraft but an accessory for a plastic kit: the corresponding section of the trailing edge of the wing is cut out and replaced by the parts from the set. The model then does not look static in a display case but like an aircraft on approach to the runway.
The Boeing 747-400 is the most widespread version of the legendary four-engine aircraft with the characteristic humped forward fuselage. It can be told from the older machines of the line by the winglets on the extended wings and by the two-member crew in a glass cockpit. Power was provided by General Electric CF6-80C2, Pratt and Whitney PW4000 or Rolls-Royce RB211-524G and H engines. The wing carries exceptionally extensive high-lift devices, because an aircraft of such weight has to land at a reasonable speed; the extended triple-slotted flaps are among the most conspicuous features of the 747 on approach.
First mark the cut on the wing precisely, cut with a margin to the line and level the surface with a file. Try the parts dry until they sit without pressure, and watch the symmetry of both halves of the wing, which is best checked by looking from the front. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue in small drops. Lay out the painting in advance, because extended flaps reveal surfaces that cannot be reached once glued. With a large 747 model it moreover pays to support the assembly until the glue has hardened, so that the flaps do not droop under their own weight.
