Fourteen-inch wheel rims of the Italian competition sedan Abarth 131 with smoother tires for a tarmac form, 1:24 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
Group 4 cars differed from one another between individual events mainly in what they were shod with. The Fiat 131 Abarth set out on special stages with a hard surface on a considerably finer tread pattern than on muddy sections, because on smooth tarmac it is the contact patch and the stiffness of the tire sidewall that decide, not the ability to bite through a loose base. This set captures exactly that form.
The basis was a civilian four-door car from Turin, of which the builders left only the silhouette. The designers put a stronger engine with a valvetrain from the Abarth company underneath it, modified the suspension and widened the body. Homologation required several hundred road cars to be built, which makes the subject one of the few cases in which you could buy almost the same car as the one being shown on the winners' podium.
The wheel rims have thin edges, which cannot be produced on the injection-molded parts of an ordinary kit, and a precisely drawn central part. The tires are rigid, so they hold their shape and do not sag under the weight of the model the way the rubber shoes from a box do.
It pays to try dry first how the wheel falls into the wheel arch, and to adjust the length of the axle pin if need be. The surface takes well after a light sanding with fine paper and after a primer coat in a thin layer, so that the details are not clogged. The nuts and the center cap will stand out when a darker shade is rubbed into the hollows and the excess is wiped away with a cotton swab.
