A plastic kit from the Japanese maker Hasegawa in 1:24 scale. The real subject is the Datsun Sunny Truck in the early form with the type designation GB120, supplemented in this release with widened fender flares, the so-called over fenders. It is exactly these that turn a utility truck into a modified piece of the kind that still turns up on the Japanese scene today.
The Sunny Truck is a light pickup derived from the Sunny passenger car. The B120 series appeared in Japan in 1971 and carried a four-cylinder engine of about 1.2 liters, which the type designation itself refers to. The vehicle proved exceptionally tough: it was produced in an essentially unchanged form for over two decades, so several type designations and small changes of appearance came and went during that time. The early form this kit captures is among the cleanest, before the later modifications to the grille and the details. Widened fender flares were not part of the standard equipment but one of the popular period modifications with wider wheels.
The body of this type is simple, so the quality of the paint shows on it all the more: long drying, fine sanding between coats and a final gloss clear coat all pay off. Fit the glazing and the chrome parts only after painting and glue them with a cement that does not fog clear surfaces aggressively. The drop sides of the bed will take bringing out the panel joints and discreet weathering, because real vehicles of this type tended to be working trucks. With the widened flares, check the seating on the fender dry before gluing.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
