This item is not a kit of an aircraft. It is a set of three-dimensional color decals for the pilot compartment of a model in 1:24 scale. The elements are printed three-dimensionally and straight away in color on a carrier decal paper, so they carry the shape and the final surface at once. That does away with gluing small parts as well as with hand painting the instruments. The target kit is Meng.
How an element gets onto the model - by a procedure close to a classic wet decal. The part is cut out of the sheet, soaked in lukewarm water for about 15 seconds and slid off the paper into place. It has no adhesive layer of its own and holds on gloss varnish (Future, Klear or Tamiya X-22), which you apply to the plastic beforehand; on broken-up surfaces a drop of super glue helps. Do not use decal softener or setting solution; the chemicals would damage the printed resin layer.
The Fokker Dr.I was a German fighter triplane deployed from 1917. Three lifting surfaces one above another gave the machine a large lifting area with a small span, which showed in an excellent rate of climb and agility at the price of a lower maximum speed. It was powered by a rotary engine and the armament consisted of a pair of synchronized machine guns. Only a few hundred were built, yet it belongs among the best known aircraft of the First World War. On a triplane the cockpit is well open to view, so detailing the interior pays off on a model.
The 1:24 scale is ideal for this kind of accessory, because the elements are big enough to stand out. Work with tweezers with smooth jaws and a sharp scalpel, and separate the elements one by one only at the moment when you are seating them. The base onto which an element goes has to be clean, degreased, smooth and coated with gloss varnish; unevenness will show through a thin element. Once everything is seated the whole can be unified with matte varnish, if the sheen of the surface does not suit the surroundings. Do not hurry, as an element seated crookedly is hard to remove.
The set is an accessory for a kit. The base Meng kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
