An extensive set for detailed work on the engine bay of the fuel-injected Mini. Resin parts in 1:24 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The engine bay of the small British car is unusually crammed – a four-cylinder mounted transversely, the transmission beneath it, and around that a tangle of hoses, cables and reservoirs stacked into a space that today would not even take a spare wheel. That is exactly why rendering it is so rewarding: the density of detail is part of the real subject, not overdone ornament.
A set of this scope makes sense on a model that will be displayed with the front opened up. The reward is a car on which the viewer still has something to look at after several minutes. Collectors value such pieces more than perfectly painted bodies, because the work is visible at first glance and cannot be skimped.
A workshop scene suggests itself: the car with the hood open, a mechanic bent over the engine, a trolley of tools, oil stains on the concrete and cans set aside by the wall. A clean showroom would be a waste here, by contrast, because a covered engine would hide all the work. Spot lighting aimed from above into the space under the hood is a simple trick with a large effect.
The build calls for time. The individual castings are painted separately and only then put together, because in a finished bay a brush is hard to maneuver. Hoses and lines are added from wire and sleeving in matching thicknesses. Light soiling with pigment and a thin layer of oil around the joints give the whole the credibility that paint alone will not provide.
