The second generation of the Skyline GT-R with the works designation KPGC110 is one of the shortest chapters of Japanese motoring. It arrived in 1973 on the body nicknamed Kenmeri at home, under the hood it carried the S20 six-cylinder with twin overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, and yet just under two hundred pieces were sold. The oil crisis and tightened emissions limits closed the program before it managed to show itself in a competition season. The Racing Custom epithet therefore speaks of a car that was never actually built: of a racing specification with widened fenders and race numbers, which fans of the marque take to this day as an unfulfilled promise.
Inside lie classic injection-molded sprues in hard polystyrene, separately packed clear parts for the windows and the headlights, and a printed sheet with circuit markings. The body, the underside, the interior and the wheels make up separate groups of parts that only hold together once glued. The wheels fit onto axles, so the model can also be put in a display case with the wheels turned.
Paints, glue, sanding sponges and spraying equipment are not included in the package. Display-case quality of paint on a body of this type rests on a filler primer and on a gloss clear coat drawn over the decals. Photo-etched ornaments and resin conversions are kept by the Japanese makers for separate sets. Anyone who wants to go beyond the set reaches for them separately; the build itself manages without them and the result is a complete car even so. The instructions lead the build in numbered steps and the color references in them rest on the maker's own range of shades.
