A set for working out the cabin of the small French Renault 5 Turbo in its second, series-built form.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Renault 5 Turbo came about by the designers taking an ordinary city car, throwing the rear bench out of it and putting a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine driving the rear wheels in its place. From a tame five-door car came a squat sprinter with huge fenders, which in the rallies of the early 1980s collected wins even on the asphalt of Monte Carlo.
It is in the interior that the two versions differ most. The first, expensive series had a cabin designed from scratch, with shapes of its own for the panels and striking colors. The second version was frugal: it reached for parts from the ordinary production 5 and thereby tamed the inside into a more civilian form. Anyone building the later car after photographs cannot use the fittings of the first series, or the other way round – which is exactly why the maker defined the set this way.
The 5 with its mid-mounted engine stayed in rallying even after cars with all-wheel drive overtook it at international level, and at home in France it became an object of collectors' respect. Surviving examples change hands today for sums that would have taken the original customers' breath away.
The interior is assembled before the body is closed up, so it is sensible to start with it. It works well to put the base shade on all the castings at once and only then to get down to telling the individual surfaces and small fittings apart.
A small car has a small cabin, and all the more of it is visible through the windows. A worked-out interior shows at once on a model of this size.
