About product

Subaru 360 Young SS in 1:24 Scale

An injection-molded plastic kit of the tiny Japanese car Subaru 360 in its more sportily tuned Young SS version, in 1:24 scale from the manufacturer Hasegawa. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted and, thanks to the dimensions of the real subject, it is one of the smallest models that arise in this scale.

The real subject

The Subaru 360 was the marque's first production passenger car and at the same time one of the key representatives of the Japanese kei class, that is of the smallest cars as defined by the regulations. It was powered by an air-cooled two-stroke twin placed at the rear, and the body was light and rounded, which earned the car its nickname after the ladybug. The designation Young SS belonged to the more sportily tuned form of the late 1960s, which had a sharper character than the ordinary versions meant for commuting.

Building: how the car sits and the glazing

A small car forgives mistakes least of all; on a short wheelbase any lean shows at once. So put the chassis together with its wheels dry and check on a flat board that the model stands on all four wheels and that the track matches the fenders. Leave the ride height as the factory had it; a lowered kei car looks unnatural. The glazing on this body is large and curved, so it suits being glued right at the end with an adhesive for clear parts, after confirming dry that the part seats in the opening without pressure. The inside of the car is clearly visible through the large windows, and it pays to set it apart with at least two shades. Paint the body in thin coats; on a small area a heavy coat of paint gives itself away at once.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Japanese cars of the 1960s
  • Modelers who want a smaller and quicker project
  • Those interested in the kei class and in unconventional real subjects
  • Builders putting together a collection in a uniform 1:24 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was the more sportily tuned form of the Subaru 360 of the late 1960s, which had a sharper character than the ordinary versions meant for commuting.

The real subject is among the smallest passenger cars of all, so even in 1:24 scale this is a tiny model. In a display case beside ordinary cars the difference is marked.

Yes, in extent it is a manageable project. Watch out above all for how the wheels sit and for the thin coats of paint a small body calls for.
