About product

Just a belt across the lap, nothing more

Fighter aircraft of the First World War managed without shoulder straps. The pilot was secured in his seat by a single belt led across his lap, and with the machine inverted he essentially held himself in by his own strength. The designers did not regard that as a shortcoming, because in a fire or a break-up of the airframe the point was above all to leave the cockpit as fast as possible, and every further buckle lengthened that moment.

This set captures exactly that situation. Compared with the sister item of the same line, you will not find an attachment to the seat back here, because the machine in this form did not have one.

Placing and finishing

The open cockpit of the triplane at 1:24 offers the viewer a look all the way down to the floor, so it is worth paying attention to where the strap disappears under the cushion as well. Let the ends vanish into a gap or behind a side panel, and never finish them loose above a surface.

The recommended sequence is simple: a finished seat, a finished floor, and only then the belt. If you fit it earlier, every further touch of a brush or tweezers will damage it and a repair will no longer be clean.

Finish the sag of the fabric over the edge of the cushion by supporting the material lightly and letting it dry in a shape that looks relaxed. A taut belt as straight as a ruler gives away that it is a print, and that is exactly what you want to avoid.

A collection benefits when the individual machines in it do not look like exact copies of one another. It is enough to vary the sag of the belt slightly and the angle at which the end disappears under the cushion, and each model gains a character of its own without your having to reach for different equipment.

Photograph the finished interior before you close it up. Once the build is done you will no longer get to it.

FAQ

Aircraft of the end of the First World War as a rule did not have one. The pilot was held by a single belt across his lap, and that was the real equipment of this machine too.

Yes. The other item captures the older adjustment with a pin and a chain, while this one concentrates on the plain belt without that mechanism.

As the last item of the cockpit, after the seat and the floor are finished. Any later intervention with a tool in the cockpit area can harm it.

Fine-tipped tweezers, a sharp knife and a soft damp brush for adjusting the position will do.
