The set by the Art Scale brand contains pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the kit of the four-engined bomber Avro Lancaster in the B Mk.I and Mk.III versions by Border Model in 1:32 scale. It is not a kit, nor an accessory that would be glued onto the model permanently. It is an aid for painting: you stick the masks on, spray and take them off again.
Why masks make particular sense with the Lancaster
The Lancaster has extensive glazing, including several gun turrets, and in 1:32 scale these are large surfaces with a quantity of frames. Cutting them out of masking tape by hand is a whole evening's work and the result tends to vary. Pre-cut masks shorten this step to minutes and above all give even, sharp edges to the frames across the whole model.
Before masking, wash the glazing in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let it dry freely, so that the mask holds. Lift the masks off the sheet with the tip of a scalpel and transfer them to the model with tweezers; fingers would leave grease on the film. Press each mask down with a wooden toothpick after sticking it on, especially in the corners, where the paint most often creeps under. Spray in thin coats; one heavy coat creeps under more than three light ones. Remove the mask while the paint is freshly dried, not after several days, when the film already has a firm edge and may tear off along with it.
The set is a masking aid for painting the model. The model itself and paints are not part of the package.
