About product

1:32 Lightning F.3 decals, XR720 of No. 11 Squadron (Xtradecal)

A decal sheet in 1:32 scale for the British Lightning F.3 interceptor in the form of machine XR720 of No. 11 Squadron, based at Binbrook, the period 1973 to 1976, in green and gray camouflage. It is a standalone accessory for a model from the British manufacturer Xtradecal, not a kit.

The real subject

The Lightning came about as a supersonic interceptor with the emphasis on rate of climb. Characteristic are the arrangement of two turbojets one above the other in the fuselage and a swept wing of low aspect ratio. The F.3 version represented a later stage in the development of the line. In the second half of the 1970s the machines already routinely wore a camouflage finish and national insignia in a subdued form, so a model built from this sheet looks different from the older glossy machines in natural metal.

Application tips

A large-scale model has markedly engraved panel lines and sometimes riveting as well, over which a decal will not settle by itself and will stay stretched over the recess like a bridge. Use a decal softener, therefore: first settle the decal into position, blot the excess water away and only then brush a thin layer of the product over it. The softened film will ripple and must not be touched until it dries, otherwise it will tear. Once dry it usually conforms exactly to the relief. With thicker decals repeat the procedure once; with thin ones a single application is enough. Always try the effect out on a decal at the edge that you will not use on the model.

Who the sheet is for

  • builders of large-scale models of British jet aircraft
  • modelers who want a particular machine of a particular squadron
  • anyone interested in the form of the type in the 1970s
  • those who work with softeners and want the decal settled perfectly

The package contains the decal sheet only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It softens the carrier film so that it sticks even into engraved panel lines and over riveting.

Only after the decal has been settled into the right position and the excess water has been blotted away.

No, it is only a decal sheet.

Do not touch it and let it dry. The rippling usually disappears by itself as it dries.
