A model of an American bomber with a cross on the wing looks at first glance like a mistake, but in reality it is a documented piece of wartime history. The set from DN Models offers markings for several such machines and goes with them as far as a detail you will not find anywhere else: the dark patches with which the Germans oversprayed the original American stars before their own insignia went onto the metal.
Damaged bombers that landed on occupied territory could be repaired and flown again. A special unit used them for training, for the analysis of the opponent's armament and for clandestine flights behind the front. Only a handful of surviving photographs exist and each of them shows a slightly different solution, so reconstructing such a machine is more detective work than routine. Before building, it pays to track down further sources.
First spray the original American scheme including the stars, then lay the dark patches over it and only at the very end add the crosses. Layering in this order gives the surface depth and the traces of the repaint stay perceptible, exactly as it looks in the photographs. Lightly sanding the edges of the patches will heighten the effect further.
The contents of the package are masking sheets; the aircraft and paints are not supplied.
