Pre-cut masks for the cockpit glazing and for the wheel hubs of the F-80C Shooting Star jet fighter in 1:32 scale. In shape they match the kit from Special Hobby.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star was created while the Second World War was still on, but it did not manage to take part in the fighting in Europe. It came fully into its own five years later over Korea, where it flew thousands of hours against ground targets. The C version received a more powerful engine and a strengthened wing with points for bombs and unguided rockets and became the most numerous production form of the whole type.
It is precisely machines designated F-80C that are credited with the very first combat between two jet aircraft, which took place in November 1950 over northwestern Korea. Against the fresh MiGs with a swept wing the American fighter with its straight wing was already a generation behind, and in air combat it was quickly replaced by the Sabre. In the attack role, however, it stayed in the front line until the end of the conflict.
The set deals with the two places that cause the greatest trouble during painting: the frames of the cockpit canopy and the wheel hubs. The individual shapes are die-cut in advance, so there is no measuring and no trimming of tape with a knife directly on a clear part, where a scratch is easily cut. The mask is peeled off its carrier film, pressed into place and taken off again once the paint has been sprayed.
The outlines come from the geometry of the kit that Special Hobby released for this machine in the scale in question. They need not align on a canopy from another maker, because every mold sets the frames a little differently.
Wipe the clear part free of grease before gluing and let it dry perfectly. Apply the paint in thin coats, because a heavy coat creates a ridge at the edge of the film which stays apparent even after it is removed. It also pays to spray the inside of the cockpit first, while the part is freely accessible.
