About product

Masking set for the Fiat CR.42 in 1:32 scale

This package holds no aircraft model and no building parts. It is a set of masking templates die-cut from thin masking paper with a self-adhesive layer, which the modeler applies to the finished surface of a Fiat CR.42 model in 1:32 scale and only then sprays. The manufacturer is Eduard of Obrnice near Most, which makes the masks die-cut by machine exactly to the shapes of a particular kit, so the laborious cutting of tape with a knife on the model itself is no longer needed.

The real subject

The Fiat CR.42 Falco was an Italian single-seat fighter biplane with a Fiat A.74 radial engine and fixed landing gear, created at the end of the 1930s. In construction it followed on from the older CR.32 type and was among the last biplanes taken into front-line fighter service at a time when all-metal monoplanes were already coming in elsewhere. For a modeler it is interesting precisely for that combination of a classic biplane structure, bracing and a radial engine.

Usage tips

Masking paper holds best on a smooth, completely dry surface, so let the model settle before masking and degrease the surface. Lift the templates off the backing film with sharp tweezers or the tip of a knife, lay them on dry and then press the edge down carefully with a toothpick or a rounded tool around the whole perimeter; it is exactly an edge that has not been pressed down that tends to be the reason paint seeps under. On a biplane expect the masking to interleave with the bracing and the struts, so it is practical to spray the glazing frame first in the interior color and only then in the top shade. Apply the paint in thin coats and take the mask off while the finish is still freshly dry, not after several days, when it may tear the edge of the coat away.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building a large biplane in 1:32 scale who want crisp transitions on the glazing frames
  • Those who prefer spraying to decal frames
  • Beginners for whom cutting masks by hand takes the most time
  • Builders who want to save work and reduce the risk of damaging the clear parts

The set is an accessory to a plastic kit. The model itself, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is purely a set of masking templates for painting. The Fiat CR.42 plastic kit has to be obtained separately.

The exact extent of the masking is given by the manufacturer on the box of the set. Masks of this kind are standardly used on the frames of the glazing, and on some sets also on the wheels.

Best shortly after the paint has dried, with sharp tweezers and by pulling it at an angle back over itself rather than straight up. After a longer time the finish cross-links and the edge of the coat risks coming off with the mask.

Masking paper of this kind has a weak adhesive intended for modeling use. Even so, do not leave a mask on the model needlessly long and do not apply it to a freshly painted or softened surface.
