A resin casting of the French Gnome Monosoupape nine-cylinder rotary in 1:32. A replacement for the kit engine, for models of British and French aircraft of the First World War.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Gnome Monosoupape got its name from what it lacked: it had a single valve per cylinder. The exhaust poppet sat in the head, while the fresh mixture got inside through ports in the cylinder wall which the piston uncovered at bottom dead center. The design thus lost the whole intake valve gear, saved weight and gained in simplicity. The nine-cylinder version that this casting captures gave around a hundred horsepower.
A hundred horses was enough in the middle of the war for a light fighter as well as for a trainer. This type turned the pusher propeller of the British DH.2 fighter, powered the Vickers F.B.5 observation machine and was among the units that could be seated in the universal mounting of the Avro 504 trainer. The pilot did not throttle it with a throttle lever but with an ignition cut-out, and from that comes the broken spluttering that is so easy to recognize in period film footage. The supply of oil, meanwhile, lasted barely two hours of flight.
In 1:32 the engine in an open nose is a dominant feature that the viewer looks over before anything else. The star of cylinders, the finning of the heads and the pushrods come out of resin in a degree of detail that a split plastic mold cannot hold. Before painting it is enough to cut off the sprue gates, wash the parts and let them dry out; metallic shades hold considerably better on a smooth and properly degreased surface. Anyone who takes the trouble to use thin wire instead of the cast pushrods gains more in fidelity than from any other possible intervention.
