The He 219 was the first German aircraft designed from the start as a specialized night fighter. It was powered by a pair of Daimler-Benz 603 series engines, had nose-wheel landing gear and, as one of the first production machines, ejection seats as well. It carried a radar for finding targets at night and heavy cannon armament, on some of the machines completed with obliquely upward-firing cannons. It saw combat from 1943 with the units of the night fighter force; it was built in relatively small numbers and in several production versions.
