A set of masking templates for the national insignia and roundels of a model of the Hawker Hurricane Mk.IIc in 1:32 scale. It is a different kind of set from glazing masks - it has nothing to do with the frame of the cabin. The templates are stuck onto the airframe and the insignia are sprayed straight in paint instead of a decal.
A sprayed insignia against a decal
A decal is always one layer extra. It carries a transparent carrier film, which has an edge, shines on a flat finish and, when laid badly, has a silvery haze appear under it. A sprayed insignia has no film - it is paint on paint, so it does not silver, has no visible edge and behaves the same as the paint around it. When weathering, a wash or flattening then comes along, the insignia ages together with the airframe, not like a sticker on it.
It follows the surface it lies on
In a large scale this difference is more marked, because the insignia are large and lie across engraved lines, riveting and the curvature of the skin. A decal has to be settled over a surface like that with softener and even so it sometimes wrinkles. Sprayed paint follows the relief by itself and the lines under it stay legible.
The insignia are sprayed only onto a finished and dried base finish. Lay the template down, press the whole perimeter home and spray in several thin coats, not in one thick one - a thick coat creates a palpable step at the edge. With multicolored insignia let every color dry thoroughly before the next one comes. Take the mask off once it has gone tacky, while the coat is still flexible.
