1:32 Italian Airman in Roold Crash Helmet is a figure of an Italian airman of the First World War in the Roold protective helmet from Copper State Models in 1:32 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The figure from the workshop of Copper State Models presents an Italian military airman of the First World War with the characteristic Roold type protective helmet. The 1:32 scale goes with the large kits of Great War machines, and the figure will give a model the period atmosphere of an Italian front-line airfield.
The Roold helmet was a padded protective headgear of French origin that airmen wore as protection in a hard landing or a crash; besides the French air service it spread among Italian crews too. The Italian air service conducted its fighting above all over the Alpine front and the river Piave: fighter pilots flew the Hanriot HD.1 and SPAD types, while three-engine Capronis undertook long-range raids. The figure of an airman in a Roold helmet thus points to a less known but highly distinctive chapter of the air war.
The basis is a clean, degreased surface and a light primer. Treat the helmet with shades of brown leather with a fine sheen, while the clothing holds rather to matte earthy tones. Work in weak layers, fill the shadows out with a glaze and finish the details of the face only after the underlying layers have dried. The figure stands out nicely at a landing gear wheel or at the tail surfaces of a biplane.
