Pre-cut masks for the Japanese Ki-84 Hayate fighter, 1:32 scale. They include masking of the clear part from the outside and the inside plus five national insignia discs.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate was among the most capable Japanese fighters of the closing war. The Allies gave it the code name Frank, and the Japanese name Hayate means gale. The machine had a powerful radial engine, a teardrop canopy and a fuselage that tapers smoothly behind the cockpit in every direction at once.
On this type the national insignia disc ends up on surfaces curved in two axes, on the fuselage behind the cockpit and on the wing leading edge. A flat printed film cannot be laid onto such a surface without a surplus of material gathering somewhere. Wrinkles form that then have to be dissolved with a decal softener while you hope the film gives way before it tears. Sometimes it gives way, other times a trace is left along the edge and the insignia looks stuck on, because stuck on it really is.
A self-adhesive mask has no surplus, because it is not the shape that is transferred to the surface but only its outline. The paint then follows the surface exactly, including the rivets and panel lines that run under the insignia. This is where sprayed markings differ most clearly from every alternative, and in a large scale the difference shows even in a photograph.
Japanese discs of the closing war were often accompanied by a white border that separated the insignia from the dark green upper surface. For spraying that means two stages: first a light circle of larger diameter, and only after it has dried the inner color. The border decides whether the result will look as crisp as print, because an uneven width shows sooner than a deviation in shade.
