About product

Wooden propeller in resin for the Bf 108 Taifun 1:32

The propeller is an awkwardly exposed part on an aircraft model. It is visible from every angle, it has a thin section, and that is exactly why it comes out badly in injection-molded plastic: the blades end up thicker than they should be, and often with a parting seam along their whole length. A resin casting gets around that problem: the section of the blade can be more slender and the edges sharper. This particular set matches the form with a wooden propeller, that is the variant with fixed blades of laminated wood that were used on the touring and liaison machines of the day. The maker is Eduard of the Czech Republic.

The real subject

The Messerschmitt Bf 108 Taifun was a four-seat cantilever low-wing aircraft of the 1930s, intended for touring and liaison flights. It was a civilian-oriented machine with practical engineering, whose design school foreshadowed the later fighters of the same brand. A wooden propeller was part of the standard equipment of the day on it, and on a model it is a detail that immediately establishes the character of the whole machine.

How the part is worked

Start by washing the casting in lukewarm soapy water: remnants of mold release agent are the main reason paint later peels off. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw, and never break it, as the thin blades are fragile. Do the sanding wet and with a respirator. It is glued with cyanoacrylate, since cement for plastic has no effect on resin. For painting a wooden propeller the oil glaze technique is rewarding: a light base, then a darker oil color drawn over it with a brush along the blade, which creates the grain of the wood. A gloss clear coat at the end, because wooden propellers tended to be varnished.

Who the part is for

  • Builders of the Bf 108 in 1:32 scale who want a realistic blade section
  • Modelers who want to take their time over imitating wood with an oil glaze
  • Anyone with experience of resin, cyanoacrylate and primer
  • Collectors of interwar civilian and liaison aircraft

This is an accessory to a model, not a stand-alone kit. The base model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a bare resin casting, and you create the wood grain by painting, typically with a light base and an oil glaze.

No. It is one replacement part for a plastic model in 1:32 scale that you have already bought.

A casting allows a thinner blade section and sharper edges and has no parting seam that would have to be sanded along the whole blade.

With cyanoacrylate. Before painting, wash the casting in soapy water because of the mold release agent and spray it with primer.
