A sheet of technical lettering 1:32 for the Polish license-built fighters of the Lim series and their Soviet originals the MiG-15 and MiG-17, in the version for the early period of service.
Responsibility details are not available.
After the war Poland built up a jet fighter force of its own by starting to produce Soviet types at home. At the plant in Mielec machines designated by the abbreviation Lim were built, that is a license-built fighter: the Lim-1 matched the MiG-15, the Lim-2 its bis version, the Lim-5 was derived from the MiG-17F and the later Lim-6 was already a Polish development of the type with ground-attack armament. To them were added the two-seat SBLim trainers, converted from the fuselages of single-seat machines. Together they were the most numerous family of aircraft the Polish air force has ever operated.
This is not a set of national insignia but the technical lettering of the airframe in the variant for the early period. It holds warning lettering at the gun armament, marks at the access panels, captions at the fuel and oil fillers, notices at the entry to the cockpit, tire pressure markings and other small texts that appeared in a different form on the machines of the 1950s than on the later series.
In 1:32 the MiG-15 has a span of roughly thirty-one centimeters and a fuselage length of around thirty-one. The model is therefore large enough for the inadequacy of a bare airframe without lettering to be immediately visible on the smooth silvery finish. Adding the service lettering is among the cheapest ways of moving such a model toward the credibility that a large scale demands.
The division of labor between this sheet and the markings from the kit has a logic of its own. The checkerboards and the numbers differ on every machine, whereas the lettering of the airframe stays essentially the same across the series, and it pays to have it in better printing than tends to be included in the box.
