1:32 Paint Masks For Tamiya P-51D Mustang Insignia And Canopy is a set of pre-cut masks for the national insignia and the cockpit canopy frames of the P-51D fighter in a large scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set deals with two things at once: the stars and bars of the US Army Air Forces and the framing of the sliding cockpit canopy. The markings are sprayed directly onto the skin, so no step of carrier film arises on the model and no glossier rectangle around the marking. That is what shows most in a large scale and decides whether a finished machine comes across as convincing.
The North American P-51D was an escort fighter with a Merlin engine and a teardrop canopy, which from 1944 accompanied bomber formations as far as German territory. The white star in a blue circle with bars at the sides was meant to let their own antiaircraft defenses and the gunners of the bombers recognize the machine at a great distance, which is why it was drawn in large dimensions on the wings and the fuselage. The dimensions and the position of the marking were prescribed, so even a slight deviation is noticeable on a model.
The insignia masks are multipart and are sprayed in layers: first the white base area, after it has dried the blue circle and finally any outlining. Every layer needs precise placement, so it pays to mark the position of the first part by the rivet lines and other reference points on the skin. The canopy frames are applied from the inside and the outside, so that the cockpit gets the correct interior and exterior shade.
