A model of the unusual single-seat Quickie aircraft in the large 1:32 scale from the Czech brand Brengun. The real subject is so small that even in 1:32 scale the finished model comes out in size more like an ordinary kit in 1:48 — all the better for the detail to show on it. It is a small-series kit, that is, a product in a smaller run, with which you have to reckon on cleaning the parts up by hand and on preparing the joints more carefully than with mass-produced injection-molded plastic. The same manufacturer also makes a version in a smaller scale, so you can choose the size for your display case.
The Quickie is a single-seat aircraft designed according to the concept of Burt Rutan and offered to builders of homebuilt aircraft. Characteristic is the tandem arrangement of two lifting surfaces: the front surface carries the main landing gear wheels at its tips and the rear surface is a classic wing, so that the machine gives the impression of the letter X when seen from above. It was powered by a small air-cooled industrial engine with an output in the order of a few tens of horsepower. It was precisely the combination of a minute power unit with an aerodynamically clean airframe that made the aircraft an example of an exceptionally efficient design; the first flight took place in the second half of the 1970s.
Wash the parts before gluing in lukewarm water with detergent and remove the release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutter; do not snap them off; do the sanding wet and with respiratory protection. Glue small-series castings with cyanoacrylate glue and always try the joints dry first. With a tandem arrangement, double-check the angles of both lifting surfaces and whether they are parallel with each other — asymmetry is immediately visible on this type. The surface of the aircraft is smooth and glossy, so devote time to the primer and to sanding the base down; apply gloss varnish in thin layers. Before the decals, varnish the surface to a gloss, and after the decals even the surface out according to the degree of gloss you want.
