Masking set for a large model of the Avenger torpedo bomber, complemented by a pair of turned metal barrels for the wing Brownings of 12.7 mm caliber.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Grumman Avenger was the heaviest single-engine machine ever to take off from the decks of American aircraft carriers, and its combat debut at Midway in 1942 turned out disastrously. The later production form which this set covers already had its armament rebuilt: a pair of Browning M2 machine guns of 12.7 mm caliber built directly into the leading edges of the wing. It is their muzzles that you get in the package as turned metal parts.
The layout of the weapons on this aircraft is worth attention. The pilot aimed the wing pair with the whole fuselage, whereas the dorsal turret with another 12.7 mm weapon rotated independently and covered the rear hemisphere. Under the tail, in a tunnel, lay the third crew member with a lighter machine gun of 7.62 mm caliber. Three different stations, three different angles of fire and two calibers on one machine. On a model that arrangement is recognized by three different openings in the skin, of which only the wing ones get metal inserts.
The set contains masks for the cockpit canopy cut separately for the outer and separately for the inner side, then four masks for the national insignia and the metal barrels mentioned. Inner masking matters on such an extensive greenhouse, because the frames are clearly visible from inside. The masks are applied to degreased and dried paint; the metal parts only have to be shortened to the required length and glued into the wing in place of the plastic moldings.
