A set of farm animals from the range Dynamo-Models devotes to the rural setting. According to the name these are hens, roosters and chicks in 1:35 scale, that is an accessory for dioramas of a farmyard, a village or a farm. The range also holds further animal subjects, among them dogs, cows and horses, so a rural scene can be populated step by step.
Animals are one of the most effective ways of bringing a scene to life in a diorama without adding further human figures to it. Poultry also works differently from large farm animals: it is small, it can be laid out in irregular clusters and it fills exactly those spots by a wall, by a gate or under a hay cart that would otherwise stay empty. A viewer mostly does not take it in as the main subject, but he recognizes from it at once that this is an inhabited place and not a stage set. In modeling practice poultry finds its most frequent use in Normandy and Eastern European scenes, where vehicles meet ordinary farming.
With poultry the layout matters more than with any other accessory. Never line it up regularly - animals cluster naturally and the clusters have differing density. Keep the chicks close together, and place the rooster on his own and on a raised spot. Try the layout dry before gluing and look at the scene from the viewer's eye level. If you paint the animals yourself, avoid pure white; farmyard poultry has feathers that are more of a dirty cream, and the legs look convincing only with a gentle soiling from the ground.
