The Bedford QL was a British all-wheel drive truck built from the early 1940s that became one of the pillars of supply for British and Allied units during the Second World War. It was powered by a gasoline inline six-cylinder engine, and the design was built on simplicity and easy maintenance in the field. A whole family of versions arose on a common chassis: a flatbed version for general transport, a troop carrier with a high body, a radio truck, a tanker and a tractor for an anti-aircraft gun. Bedford QL trucks served in North Africa, in Italy and in northwest Europe, and some of them survived into the postwar years.
With a truck it pays to build the frame and the drive train as a separate assembly and paint it before you fit the cab and the cargo bed onto it. Leave the tires aside until the painting is finished. Mask the cab windows; the glazed area is large and painted-over glass ruins a model. British vehicles are usually displayed in a uniform khaki tone, where working marks stand out — a scuffed edge of the cargo bed, mud on the fenders and a dusty cast on the tarpaulin give the truck credibility.
