By 1944 the portable pressed container was an absolute matter of course with British units and was produced in large series. The water form kept the same outlines as the fuel one, so that it would fit into the same stowage frames, but it differed in its closure and marking. In the equipment of vehicles traveling through Normandy and on to the Rhine these containers were omnipresent, often in two or three rows above one another.
Lay the load out in advance: a vehicle leaving a depot, where everything is lined up, looks different from a machine after a week in the field, where a tarpaulin, a crate and a coiled rope lie among the containers. Later British equipment carried a darker olive base, on which dust from French roads stands out particularly well. Apply it in coats and let it dry between them, otherwise the pigment runs together into patches. Then suggest rubbed places lightly with a metallic shade.
