Doors and frames for model buildings 1:35

Two doors in 1:35 scale printed from resin by the Ukrainian brand Spalah. The casting includes the leaf as well as the frame with the panels picked out, so it can be set into a wall of any material, whether you build your structure from plaster, card or foamed plastic.

Doors as the narrator of a scene

Open, half-open or broken-in doors are among the strongest means of giving a scene some action. They lead the eye inside the building, frame a figure in the entrance and create a natural shadow. Two pieces allow a combination: leave one closed in its frame and lift the other off its hinges, prop it against a wall or lay it across the rubble. It pays to think beforehand about where the scene will be lit from, because the shadow in the entrance makes half the impression.

Working with the casting

First remove the print supports and sand the surfaces down, so that the leaf seats in the frame without a gap. You create the texture of wood by scribing lightly with a needle along the length of the panels, and only then paint. A dark base works well, over it thin coats of brown and finally a peeled coat done with a piece of sponge. The fittings and the handle will take a graphite cast, and dust belongs around the threshold.
