An injection-molded plastic kit of the German anti-aircraft tank Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind in 1:35 scale from Academy. The model captures the characteristic open rotating turret with its multi-barrel anti-aircraft armament, set on the proven chassis of the Pz.Kpfw. IV medium tank. The box contains the parts of the hull, of the running gear and of the turret, together with a decal sheet for several machines.
The Wirbelwind (whirlwind) came about in the second half of 1944 as a response to the growing Allied air superiority over the battlefield. On the chassis of the Panzer IV, in place of the usual turret, an open many-sided turret was mounted with a 2 cm automatic cannon in a quadruple mounting (Flakvierling 38). The combination of a tracked chassis and rapid-firing armament made it possible to escort armored units and to defend them against low-level air attack; the open top of the turret, however, exposed the crew to fire and splinters.
First assemble and paint the running gear and the interior of the open turret - once the hull is closed up there is no way to reach them. Glue the parts with a liquid modeling cement for plastic, sand the joints and apply a primer before painting. The multi-barrel cannon and the ammunition boxes stand out with an airbrush and fine shading. On the tracks and the lower hull use washes and pigments for mud and dust effects, which bring out the busy running gear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
