About product

Bergepanzer Hetzer with a 2 cm Flak, late version, 1:35 from Thunder Model

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German recovery vehicle built on the chassis of the Jagdpanzer 38 tank destroyer and fitted with an anti-aircraft gun of 2 cm caliber. The model matches the late production form and it is a limited release with bonus parts over and above the basic edition. Thunder Model breaks the parts of this series down finely, so the kit is intended rather for more advanced modelers.

The real subject

The Bergepanzer 38 was created on the chassis of the light Jagdpanzer 38 tank destroyer, produced from 1944 in Prague. In place of the closed fighting compartment with a gun it received a lower open superstructure and winch and recovery equipment, and it served to tow and recover damaged vehicles. Given that the vehicle had an open compartment and only light armament of its own, some of the airframes were fitted later with an anti-aircraft gun of 2 cm caliber, the Flak 38 type, which could be used against ground targets as well. Late vehicles differ from the earlier ones in the details of the superstructure, the fenders and the arrangement of the equipment.

Building and painting tips

An open superstructure means the inside will be visible, so finish and paint the running gear, the floor and the equipment before closing the hull up, and do not skimp on the interior. The gun and its mount have small parts that are better painted separately and fitted right at the end. Bond with a thin cement for plastic and lay down a filler primer before painting. The multicolor late German scheme comes out well with an airbrush at low pressure. Recovery equipment tended to be very dirty in service, so a more pronounced muddy and dusty weathering on the running gear and the fenders pays off here.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of German armored equipment of the end of the Second World War in 1:35 scale
  • Anyone interested in support and recovery vehicles rather than only in fighting machines
  • Modelers who will appreciate the open superstructure and the chance to work the interior up
  • More advanced builders who are comfortable with the small parts of the gun and the equipment

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A recovery vehicle built on the chassis of the light Jagdpanzer 38 tank destroyer. In place of the closed fighting compartment with a gun it had a lower open superstructure and recovery equipment.

The open superstructure and only light armament of its own led to some of the airframes receiving a gun of 2 cm caliber. It could be used against low-flying targets and against targets on the ground alike.

It is a release supplemented with parts over and above the basic edition. Their specific list is stated on the box and in the instructions.

Rather not. The open interior and the small parts of the gun assume that you have already built some armored equipment in 1:35 scale.
