About product

Hauler 1:35 Hetzer - photo-etched fenders

An accessory set of photo-etched metal from the Czech maker Hauler. It holds no model of the vehicle nor its main parts - it is an improvement for a kit you already have at home, and it is cut for one particular kit, from Tamiya. The set deals with one of the most visible weak points of plastic models of armored equipment: the fenders. Injection-molded plastic cannot be thinner than about half a millimeter, which in 1:35 scale corresponds to plate over a centimeter thick. Photo-etch has a thickness of a few tenths of a millimeter and the impression is put right at a stroke.

The real subject

The Hetzer, that is, the Jagdpanzer 38(t), was a German light tank destroyer of the end of the Second World War built on the proven chassis of a light tank of Czechoslovak design. In a low, steeply sloped hull it carried a 75 mm gun. The vehicle was small, fairly cheap to produce and was built in large numbers, and after the war it stayed in service with several armies. Its fenders were of thin sheet and in service they commonly got bent, torn or went missing altogether - period photographs show how differently the vehicles looked.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

First remove the original fenders from the plastic and level the area where the metal is to go. Cut the parts out on a hard surface with a sharp scalpel, not with nippers, which make the metal wavy. Sand the remains after cutting down with a fine file. Before gluing, degrease the metal with spirit or detergent and let it dry completely - grease from the fingers is the commonest reason paint then fails to hold. It is glued with super glue, as glue for polystyrene does not work on metal. It is precisely with fenders that it pays to use the main advantage of photo-etch: metal keeps its shape, so you can imitate a bow, a tear or a missing section. Apply a primer meant for metal before painting, or the paint will peel off the smooth surface.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who want to move the credibility of the most visible detail on a Hetzer kit on
  • builders of dioramas where damaged or deformed fenders come in useful
  • modelers with basic experience of photo-etch and super glue
  • those who prefer one targeted improvement to an extensive set

This is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit, glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is an accessory photo-etched set for a plastic kit, which you have to have separately.

With super glue on a cyanoacrylate base. Ordinary glue for polystyrene has no effect on metal.

Plastic fenders are markedly too thick in scale because of the injection technology. A metal part has a real thickness and can moreover be bent into a damaged shape.

A sharp scalpel, a hard surface, a fine file and tweezers will do. A bending jig makes the work easier, but with the larger parts you can manage with a steel ruler.
