A plastic kit of a modern self-propelled howitzer in 1:35 scale from the Polish brand Hobby 2000, aimed at the K9A1 version as the Polish army operates it. This is equipment of today's generation, so the model offers a combination of smooth welded surfaces, a long gun barrel and sturdy running gear, a rewarding subject for anyone who builds mostly Second World War tanks and wants to try something current.
The K9 Thunder is a South Korean 155 mm tracked howitzer with a long barrel, designed to take up a firing position quickly, loose off a burst and move at once so as to avoid counter-battery fire. The K9A1 version brought modernized crew equipment and fire control systems. Poland turned to it in 2022, when it needed to make up its artillery quickly; a chassis of the same family is nothing new in Polish service, however, because the domestic Krab howitzer is based on it.
Finish and paint the running gear and the lower hull before the hull is closed and the turret fitted, because with a low tracked hull you will hardly reach it later. The long barrel needs a carefully trued joint and straight seating, otherwise any deviation is visible on the finished model at first glance. Modern equipment takes only restrained weathering: dust on the running gear, darker traces around the exhaust and wear on the surfaces the crew walks over.
