This injection-molded plastic kit captures the American Republic P-43 Lancer fighter in the B and C variants. 1:48 scale is popular with single-engine aircraft because it offers enough room for detail in the cockpit and the engine while staying compact in a display case. The model is meant to be glued together and painted.
The P-43 Lancer was a single-seat fighter of all-metal construction with a radial engine and a turbocharger, which gave it good performance at high altitude. It was created as an intermediate step in development between the older fighters of the same manufacturer and the later, far better known radial-engine type that came out of this line. As a fighter the P-43 did not make much of a mark in production; it was used mainly in training and in the reconnaissance role, and some of the aircraft were delivered abroad. That is exactly why it is a type that is missing from collections more often than its more famous successor.
Finish the cockpit and the engine first, and only then join the fuselage halves. With short-run kits it pays to try the parts dry first and to sand the mating faces if need be. Fill and sand the seams, mask the glazing and spray it with the interior color first. Apply the base with an airbrush and leave metallic finishes until the end, because they are harder to mask and to spray over. Apply the decals onto gloss varnish and work them in with a decal softener. Pick out the panel lines with a thin wash and even the surface out at the end with matte or semi-matte varnish.
