A set of photo-etched metal parts from the manufacturer Eduard for building a plastic model of the M109 self-propelled howitzer in 1:35 scale. The name covers three forms of the machine, the A2, the A3 and the German G, so the set is aimed at models of this family. It is neither a model nor a kit but an accessory to a base model, which the modeler buys separately. A list of the parts is not stated here.
The M109 is an American tracked self-propelled howitzer of 155 mm caliber with a rotating turret, taken into service by a number of armies, European users included. The German version designated G came about through changes for local requirements. It is precisely on hardware with large smooth areas of hull and turret that thin metal detail stands out most.
The photo-etch adds mainly the parts that in reality have the thickness of sheet metal: covers, grilles, brackets and small fittings. That breaks up the impression of a single solid casting and gives the surface depth. The work increases, though, so reckon on having to sand some of the plastic detail off first, so that the photo-etch will sit flat.
Cut the parts off with a scalpel on glass or on a cutting mat, make the bends in a bending tool and carry the small items with tweezers with smooth jaws. They are glued with cyanoacrylate in the smallest amount, ideally applied with a pin. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a primer, otherwise the finish will not hold on the smooth sheet. Only then do the washes and the pigments for the weathering come into play.
The set is an accessory for building a plastic model, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
