A lying mechanic for 1:35 dioramas. A figure wedged under a vehicle, which solves the hardest task of a model scene: filling the space under the chassis.
Responsibility details are not available.
There are countless figures standing beside a vehicle. Figures lying on their backs under the chassis are rare by comparison, even though this is the pose that belongs to repair work most of all: the clutch, the gearbox and the exhaust are all dealt with from below, head under the vehicle and legs sticking out.
The space under a vehicle is usually dead on a diorama, a dark hole nobody looks into. A lying figure fills it and at the same time makes the viewer bend down and look inside. A static display turns at once into a scene that asks for a second look.
Place this figure before you glue the vehicle to the base. Try it dry and check that the chest fits between the ground and the lowest part of the chassis. On low-slung vehicles it may be necessary to lift the model on a jack or to dig a shallow hollow beneath it, the way real repair crews do.
The sequence turns around here. What is otherwise hidden will be seen most: the soles of the boots, the knees and the side of the overalls. That is where the strongest contrast and the most dirt belong, while the face, which stays in shadow, only needs to be suggested. Before you fix the figure permanently, look at the result from the viewer's eye level and turn it a little accordingly.
A lying figure benefits from a few small things within reach. A wrench set down, a metal pan under dripping oil or a rag laid on the ground fill in the sense that work is going on right now, and they take up the remaining free space under the chassis.
