A strong color that can be worked with

Red granite is the boldest stone of the whole sub-range and it is handled accordingly. In reality it was used on grand floors, plinths and staircases, where it was meant to be seen. In a scene it therefore works best when it takes up a smaller area and the rest of the setting stays subdued - as a band at an entrance or the landing of a staircase for instance. If you fill a whole scene with it instead, it will drown out the figures and the equipment and the finished diorama will come across as restless in a photograph. Using it is thus a decision of composition rather than a purely technical choice.

Usage tips

• Weigh up how large a part of the scene the saturated color is to take up, and subdue the rest of the setting to it.
• Fix the area to a flat stiff board, so that it does not sag.
• Do not cover the drawing of the stone with a strong wash; a very thin line into the joints is enough.
• A layer of dust will calm the color down, which suits places where a scene is meant to be calmed.
• Run the cut along a joint and darken the light edge around the perimeter.
