An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet KV-1 heavy tank in its up-armored s Ekranami form, in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. Unlike the basic KV-1, this version captures the applique armor plates bolted onto the hull and the turret, that is the period effort to raise the resilience of the machine. The package offers a choice of tracks and new parts for the armor plates and the wheels.
The designation s Ekranami refers to the applique armor plates, ekrany in Russian, that were bolted and welded onto the front and the sides of the hull and onto the turret of the KV-1. The aim was to raise protection against ever more capable German anti-tank weapons. The applique armor is an easily recognized feature of this version and sets it apart from the smooth hull of the basic KV-1. The up-armoring, however, further raised the weight of an already heavy tank and put a strain on its drivetrain.
Pay attention to clean seating of the applique plates and to suggesting the bolt heads, which make up the character of the surface. Start with the running gear, and assemble and paint the individual track links before fitting them. Use thin cement for plastic, apply a primer and spray with an airbrush. Dark washes into the welds and the gaps between the plates will stand out particularly well; dust and mud pigments on the running gear will complete the weathering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
