On light armored cars the spare was not carried inside but outside, on a bracket at the side of the hull, where it was at hand and where everyone looking over a finished model sees it too. In period photographs it tends to be worn by hands, faded by the sun and sometimes carries quite a different pattern from the wheels the car ran on.
