The tank and its road to the other side

The T-26 was a Soviet light tank of the 1930s with a rotating turret and a 45 mm gun, well armed for its day by world standards. It reached Spain as a delivery to one of the fighting sides and became the strongest tank on the battlefield there. The vehicles the opposing side gained in combat were taken into its own units and re-marked anew. Spain was thus the first theater where modern tanks of the same type met on both sides of the front, and for a modeler it is a rewarding theme precisely because of that dual attachment.

Tips for painting and the markings

The Spanish landscape offers a dry, dusty environment and with it a pale palette. Take the base coat toward a warm shade rather than otherwise, and apply the markings onto a gloss base, so that no pale edge is left on the small areas of the turret. On a re-marked vehicle it pays to indicate that the insignia came about later than the coat beneath it: leave its surroundings lightly weathered and the marking itself a little cleaner. Take the dust mainly over the running gear and the lower part of the hull.
