About product

Photo-etched Schürzen side skirts for the StuG IV in 1:35 scale

A set of photo-etched parts from the Czech manufacturer Eduard focused on the side skirts, in German Schürzen, of the Sturmgeschütz IV assault gun in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle, but a specialized accessory for the matching plastic model. Check the extent of the set and the number of parts on the box.

What Schürzen are and why to do them in photo-etch

The side skirts were thin armor plates hung on brackets along the sides of the hull and around the superstructure. They protected the vehicle from antitank rifle rounds and from shaped-charge ammunition by making the round detonate at a standoff from the main armor. On a model they are very conspicuous and at the same time very thin surfaces that injection-molded plastic cannot render faithfully, because production needs many times the thickness of material. Photo-etched sheet erases this difference and also allows the skirts to be bent, shot through or left out entirely, as commonly looked on the vehicles of the period.

The real subject

The Sturmgeschütz IV with the designation Sd.Kfz.167 joined the chassis of the Panzer IV tank with the fighting superstructure of the StuG III Ausf.G assault gun and carried the 7.5 cm StuK 40 gun with a barrel 48 calibers long. It was produced from the end of 1943, and the side skirts belonged with it for most of its service.

Usage tips

Separate both the skirts and the hanging brackets with a scalpel on a hard surface and bend them in a photo-etch bender so that the bend comes out crisp and straight. Glue them with super glue, and on long parts use the gel variant, which gives you time to align them. If you want to damage the skirts, bend the sheet before gluing and use a round tool so that the deformation looks natural. Degrease the metal before painting and go over it with primer.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of German equipment of the Second World War in 1:35 scale
  • Builders bothered by the thick plastic skirts from the basic kit
  • Anyone interested in realistic damage and missing sections of the skirts
  • More experienced modelers working with photo-etched sheet

FAQ

They are thin side armor skirts hung along the sides of a vehicle, which protected the hull and the superstructure from antitank rifle rounds and shaped-charge ammunition.

It does not. It is an accessory focused on the side skirts; the plastic StuG IV kit has to be bought separately.

You do not; the skirts are a unit of their own. The two sets do complement each other well, though, if you want to detail the whole model.

The parts are separated with a scalpel, bent in a photo-etch bender and glued with super glue. Before painting the metal has to be degreased and gone over with primer.
