The Diamond T 972 is an American heavy truck with a dump body, from the family of off-road vehicles with drive to several axles. In the Second World War machines like this belonged to the equipment without which neither the building nor the repair of roads, landing strips and field depots could be done: they hauled gravel, sand and rubble and drove over broken ground where an ordinary truck would have become stuck. The tipper differs from the cargo version not only in its body but also in the overall impression it makes, because a raised dump body gives the model a dynamism that a static cargo truck does not have.

Separate the parts a little way from the mating surface and level the remainder with a file, so that the joints sit together dry before any glue goes on. The chassis of a truck is busy, so paint it before you set the body on it. American vehicles of the period wore a uniform matte olive green finish; the model comes to life with the seams picked out in a dark shade, wear on the edges and above all dust and dried mud on the wheels, the wheel arches and the inside of the body. It is precisely the dirt from a building site that turns a tipper into a vehicle that went somewhere.
