About product

Photo-etched Schürzen for the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.G 1:35: E.T. Model

A set of photo-etched side armor skirts, Schürzen in German, in 1:35 scale for a model of the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.G medium tank in the production form of the spring of 1943. The skirts are among the most conspicuous and at the same time the most awkward details of this tank: in reality they are thin plates hung on a frame, but in injection-molded plastic they come out unnaturally thick. A metal replacement erases the difference and in addition allows the skirts to be bent, turned or left off altogether, as was common in the field. It is not a kit of the tank but an accessory.

The real subject

Side skirts were introduced on the Pz.Kpfw.IV during 1943 as protection against anti-tank rifles and shaped-charge projectiles, which were effective against the thin side armor of the hull. The plates hung on a longitudinal frame along the sides of the hull, while separate armor plates protected the turret. The particular form of the mountings and the frame changed during production, which is why sets for individual production periods differ from each other. The Ausf.G version of the spring of 1943 is one of the most frequently built forms of this tank.

Tips for working and painting

Assemble and fit the mounting frame before you start hanging the individual plates, otherwise they will not line up. Bend and deform the skirts before gluing them on; a leaning or partly torn-off plate looks more believable than a perfectly even row. Degrease the metal and glue it with cyanoacrylate glue in spots, or with epoxy, which allows the position to be adjusted. A base coat for metal is necessary. The skirts were often lost in the field and were scuffed, so bare metal on the edges, scratches and a layer of dust are in place here. Make sure that the inner side of the skirts has the same finish as the outer, because it is in view from behind.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German armor from the period 1943 to 1945
  • Modelers bothered by the out-of-scale thickness of plastic skirts
  • Those who want to suggest missing or damaged plates
  • More experienced builders with experience of gluing metal to plastic

This is an accessory photo-etched set, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

The German term for the side armor skirts hung on a frame along the hull. They protected the thin side armor against anti-tank rifles and shaped-charge projectiles.

No. It is an accessory photo-etched set for a plastic kit of the Pz.Kpfw.IV in 1:35 scale.

First assemble and fit the mounting frame, and only then hang the individual plates. Suggest the deformation before gluing them on.

The set corresponds to the production form of the spring of 1943. Other periods had different frames and mountings, so check the match against your kit.
