About product

Photo-etched detail set for the 12.7 mm M2 heavy machine gun 1:35 (E.T. Model)

This item is neither a model nor a kit. It is a small set of photo-etched parts, that is parts etched out of thin sheet metal, intended to improve the plastic moldings of the American M2 heavy machine gun in 1:35 scale. The machine gun comes with most kits of American vehicles and is at the same time the most simplified part in the box: the perforated barrel jacket, the sights, the trigger group and the ammunition box cannot be molded finely in plastic. Photo-etched metal replaces these items and the weapon on the model stops looking like a coarse molding. The set also lends itself to diorama use, because the machine gun tends to be a prominent item on the roof of a vehicle, where the eye falls on it first.

The real subject

The 12.7 mm M2 heavy machine gun is among the longest-serving weapons of its kind. It was introduced before the Second World War and is in use to this day. It was mounted on tanks, armored personnel carriers, trucks, ships and aircraft, in both the anti-personnel and the anti-aircraft role. Its characteristic marks are the heavy barrel with a perforated cooling jacket and the box for the ammunition belt fixed beside the weapon. It is exactly this perforation that is the main reason why a photo-etched replacement pays off on this part.

Usage and painting tips

Cut the small parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and work over a tray, so that a part flying off does not disappear on you. Make the folds in a photo-etch bender. Glue them with cyanoacrylate applied on the tip of a piece of wire, as any excess turns white when it dries. Degrease the metal and brush on a metal primer. Paint the weapon a dark metallic shade, bring the edges out with a graphite pencil or with drybrushing with a metallic pigment, and run a dark wash into the recesses.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of American armored and wheeled vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who are bothered by the coarse plastic molding of the machine gun from the box
  • Diorama builders where the weapon is in the foreground
  • More experienced modelers who can manage work with very small parts

This is an accessory set for advanced modelers. It does not hold a model or a kit, and glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

12.7 mm, given in American designation as half an inch. It is a heavy machine gun introduced before the Second World War that serves to this day.

The package holds photo-etched metal parts for refining the weapon. The basic molding of the machine gun tends to come with the kit of the vehicle, which you obtain separately.

The cooling jacket of the barrel is perforated, and the holes cannot be molded in plastic. Photo-etched metal has them cut right through, so the weapon looks markedly truer.

Cut them on a hard surface, use fine tweezers and work over a tray or a light-colored cloth, so that a part flying off can be found.
