A photo-etched set that imitates the fine wire mesh — the so-called Sommerville matting — used on M4 Sherman tanks in the Second World War. In this scale fine mesh cannot be produced any other way than by etching; neither plastic nor wire will stand in for it. It is not a kit of the tank, but a detail accessory for a model in 1:35 scale.
Matting of this type came about as a prefabricated surface for field airfields: wire mesh reinforced with transverse rods was rolled out over prepared ground and formed a load-bearing surface. The material was easily available in the field, and the crews of armored vehicles began to use it in their own way. On the hull and the turret of a Sherman it served mainly as a backing into which vegetation and camouflage material were stuck, and as improvised covering of flat surfaces and hatches. The resulting look is very characteristic of period photographs and catches the eye at once on a model.
The photo-etched mesh is fine; separate it with a scalpel on a hard surface and handle it with tweezers with smooth jaws. The matting can be bent slightly over a cylindrical object so that it follows the shape of the hull and the turret; fix it in spots with cyanoacrylate. Degrease the metal before painting and spray a base coat. Spray over it in thin coats, so that the openings of the mesh are not flooded. Adjust the weathering with dust pigments and add camouflage vegetation from dry plant materials or modeling grass if you like.
The set is an accessory for a model, not a kit in its own right. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
