A 3D printed resin accessory from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for ship models in 1:350 scale. The Carley float is a life raft made up of an oval buoyancy ring with an inner net or grating; it was carried by the vessels of a number of navies and was made in several sizes according to the number of people. This set matches the version for ten people, type 2. It is not a ship model: these are equipment parts added to the deck of a finished kit or to a diorama.
The parts are made by printing in resin, so they have thin walls and fine internal relief that cannot be cast in injection-molded plastic at this scale. They are cut off the print supports with a sharp cutter, not with pliers, because printed resin is brittle and cracks under pressure. After cutting it is enough to level the pads with very fine sandpaper and to wash the parts. They are bonded with super glue or with a thin glue that cures under light, which flows better into the small contact faces.
Printed resin is supplied in the color of the material and is not pre-painted, so the painting is entirely up to you. It pays to spray the floats off the model, stuck to a wooden stick or to double-sided tape: the buoyancy ring gets its base shade and the inside is then simply darkened with a heavily thinned wash that runs into the relief. Choose the shade to suit the surroundings: on a uniformly painted deck the floats usually blend into the finish around them, while in a diorama it is worth leaving them a shade lighter so that they do not get lost in the whole. Keep the sheen as matte as the rest of the deck. They are glued to the model only after the surrounding area has been sprayed and varnished; fitted beforehand they would break under masking tape.
This is an accessory, not a ship kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
