A small accessory that does surprisingly much work on a warship model. Carley floats hung on superstructures and sides in dozens, and the way they are rendered is one of the details by which the level of a build is judged. Eduard makes them by 3D printing, so printed resin can carry the grating floor and the lashings around the ring that in 1:350 scale simply cannot be reproduced in injection-molded plastic. This set is the type 1 version in the capacity for 40 people. It is not a ship kit but detail for a model you have already bought.
A Carley float is a simple life-saving device made up of an oval buoyant ring with a grating floor. It has no sides and no propulsion; survivors sit on it or hold on from outside. It was exactly its undemanding manufacture and durability that spread it across the warships of both world wars in navy after navy. The floats were made in several capacities and forms, which is why Eduard offers variants for different numbers of people and different types of construction separately. Choosing the right combination of capacity and type matters for fidelity to a particular ship.
Cut the parts off the print supports with a sharp scalpel or a fine saw. With parts this small, work over a tray with a rim, otherwise they will ping away. Level the remains of the supports with fine abrasive paper used wet. Before painting, wash the resin in water with detergent, let it dry and apply a primer. It is bonded with super glue applied from a drop with a pin. The floats are usually painted in the same shade as the superstructure, and the grating floor can be brought out with a dark wash and light dry-brushing. If you are fitting several of them, a slight irregularity in shade and wear looks more realistic than perfect uniformity.
