This item is not a model of the ship but a photo-etched add-on set for a model of the British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal as she was in 1939, in 1:350 scale. Photo-etch can replace elements that cannot be made in plastic - thin railings, gratings, ladders and the fine structures of the superstructures - and with ships in this scale it makes the greatest difference to the overall impression. The item is marked as part one; the manufacturer follows it with further parts of the same line, so you can get only the part you really need.
HMS Ark Royal was the first British aircraft carrier built from the keel up as a modern carrier with a closed hull and two hangar decks. She entered service shortly before the Second World War and from the beginning was among the most heavily committed units of the Royal Navy. In May 1941 her torpedo Swordfish took part in the hit that crippled the steering of the battleship Bismarck and decided her fate. Ark Royal herself ended in November 1941 off Gibraltar, where a torpedo from a German submarine hit her; she sank slowly and the crew had time to leave her almost without losses.
Prepare the photo-etched parts on a hard surface, separate the pieces with a sharp knife and bend them in a bending tool or between two razor blades. They are bonded with super glue in a small amount. Before painting, degrease the metal and apply primer, otherwise the paint does not hold on the smooth surface. With railings it pays to remove the plastic originals only just before gluing the photo-etch on.
